Needs

The potential of numerical optimization techniques to assist designers and automate shape design improvements has been recognized since the 1980s, yet remains largely underutilized today — particularly when it comes to addressing multidisciplinary design problems. Several factors account for this, including:

  • the difficulty of applying state-of-the-art numerical optimization methods in an industrial context;
  • the challenge of building fully automated design optimization processes that span multiple physics, components, and disciplines — a domain known as MDO (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization);
  • the limitations of current process integration and design automation technologies (PIDO) in terms of adaptability to a wide range of use cases and maintainability in industrial environments.

These technical challenges motivated the development of GEMSEO®.

Solution

GEMSEO is a scientific Python library designed for engineers and researchers. It enables the automated exploration of design spaces and the identification of optimal multidisciplinary solutions. Its goal is to reduce both the cost and setup time required to develop and maintain automated simulation processes.

This software is built on a disruptive approach grounded in MDO formulations. An MDO formulation — also referred to as an architecture — is a simulation process template, or generic strategy, that allows the MDO process to be generated automatically and reconfigured with ease.

Important dates

2015 - Creation

GEMS (Generic Engine for MDO Scenarios) was created in 2015 by François Gallard within the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Competence Center of IRT Saint Exupéry.

IRT Saint Exupéry This team, that was led by Anne Gazaix at the time, is dedicated to the development of process automation technologies encompassing a wide range of disciplines, and their usage in a range of applications.

Since then, about 40 people have contributed directly to the development of this software.

2021 - Open source

GEMS became GEMSEO® in 2021 when IRT Saint Exupéry and its partners decided to release it as an open source project under the LGPL v3 license, with the aim of fostering large-scale collaboration. GEMSEO stands for Generic Engine for Multi-disciplinary Scenarios, Exploration and Optimization.
